Les cabanes d'oiseaux de la classe de M. Bernard

The project of elementary students at école Monseigneur-Feuiltault was to build bird houses.

Everything was going smoothly: the blueprints had been finalized, the materials purchased and the assembly process had even begun on March 11 at lunch hour. But then the lockdown started in mid-March. To ensure the project would continue, teacher Bernard Audet decided to finish putting the bird houses together in his workshop. Once this was done, the students and their parents came to pick them up, and it was the students who were responsible for selling the bird houses. Ultimately, the prettily decorated bird houses were all quickly purchased by neighbours and ended up embellishing their yards! Once classes resumed, the students decided to donate the money earned to the Maison de la famille.

    Results observed

The project allowed the students to practise their manual skills, build a product and sell it. They learnt to manage money, calculate revenue and expenses, and deal with professionals in various fields (financial institution, hardware store and the school). Their involvement in the bird house project increased their self-confidence and perseverance, and showed them they could take pride in a job well done. In addition to this, they improved their ability to co-operate with others and gained confidence in taking the initiative, even when working on the bird house project from home during the lockdown!
