Reading mat to hold vocabulary cards

Je lis et j'écris, avec le tapis

    Provincial prizewinner

    OSEntreprendre Challenge

Grade 1 students use vocabulary cards to practise reading and writing. As these can be awkward to store and carry around, the children came up with a solution. Divided into teams, the students first discussed their ideas at home and in class before presenting a reading mat prototype. The best ideas from each were retained and combined to make the perfect product: a cloth reading mat sufficiently robust and compact that it could it would fit on a student's desk.

A word bag attached to the mat held all the vocabulary cards. These could be inserted into transparent vinyl strips that would secure the cards in place, thus preventing them from sliding out or getting mixed up. The students using the reading mat were better organized and found it easier to concentrate on their homework!

    Results observed

The reading mat was a tool to help students become organized and manage their homework time. Parents said that the reading mat had stimulated their child's interest in school. In addition to resolving the initial problem, the reading mat had other functions that improved and added variety to reading and writing lessons. The reading mat was a sturdy, effective storage device!

    Involvement and support

The project owed its success in large part to the support of the school staff, the students' parents and the Cercle des Fermières.
